Two Workers Partially Buried in Dirt Cave-In at Construction Site; Technical Rescue Underway

Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services (MCFRS) responded Tuesday to a construction site in the 8100 block of Kentbury Drive near Newdale Road in Bethesda for a reported dirt cave-in and trench rescue.

According to MCFRS, two workers became trapped in a trench next to a home after the collapse. One worker was buried up to his waist while the second worker was almost completely buried by dirt. Both workers were successfully extracted, with the first rescued shortly after 1 pm and the second shortly after 2 pm. Both were transported as trauma patients with non life threatening injuries.

Approximately 60 MCFRS firefighters responded to the incident, including members of the Technical Rescue Team. Additional support came from Montgomery County Police, the Maryland State Police, and nearby federal fire departments from NIH and NSA Bethesda. A Maryland State Police medevac helicopter also brought a University of Maryland Shock Trauma “go team” to the scene. Kentbury Drive was closed to traffic during the rescue operation.
