Montgomery County Partially Lifts Potomac River Advisory Following Sewage Spill

The Maryland Department of Health announced that Montgomery County has partially lifted its recreational water advisory related to the Potomac Interceptor spill, allowing activities to resume downstream beginning at Lock 8.

The decision was based on water quality testing showing E. coli levels within acceptable limits for recreational use in those areas. However, the advisory remains in place for areas closest to the spill site, including land impacted by the sewage overflow and portions of the river within 200 feet of Swainson Island and the nearby Montgomery County shoreline.

Health officials said monitoring will continue, and there have been no reported illnesses linked to the spill in Maryland. Authorities also said public drinking water has not been affected. Residents are still advised to avoid contact with impacted areas, follow general safety precautions around natural water sources, and seek medical attention if symptoms develop after exposure.
