Montgomery County Passes ICE Out Act, Bans Private ICE Detention Centers

The Montgomery County Council unanimously passed the ICE Out Act, legislation introduced by Evan Glass, which prohibits privately owned immigration detention facilities from operating in the county.

Officials described the measure as a proactive step aimed at addressing community concerns about immigration enforcement and preventing the establishment of such facilities locally, particularly amid increased activity by federal immigration authorities in the region.

“With this legislation, Montgomery County is sending a clear message to ICE: you are not welcome here,” Glass said. Council leaders and community advocates said the law is intended to promote transparency, accountability, and community trust, while ensuring that detention facilities operated by private entities are not developed within the county. Supporters also cited broader regional and national concerns about immigration detention practices as a factor in advancing the legislation.
