Montgomery County Fair Pushes Back on Proposed August 17 MCPS School Start

The Montgomery County Agricultural Fair is raising concerns about a proposed change to the Montgomery County Public Schools calendar that could result in the school year starting during the annual fair.

Organizers say the timing of the school start date could affect participation and operations for the long-running community event, which has been held for more than 75 years.

The calendar discussion comes as Montgomery County Public Schools seeks community input while adjusting the 2026-2027 school year to comply with new state requirements. Maryland now requires school systems to end the academic year before Juneteenth on June 19, while also building in additional flexibility for weather-related closures. Officials say these requirements limit available scheduling options. A recent survey outlines three approaches, including starting school the week of August 17, shortening winter or spring break, or using certain religious observance days as potential make-up days.

According to fair officials, beginning the school year during the event could limit participation from exhibitors, reduce volunteer availability, and impact student involvement. The fair relies on contributions from 4-H exhibitors, student volunteers earning service learning hours, and more than 1,000 volunteers who collectively contribute tens of thousands of hours each year. Organizers say the event also serves as an educational and community experience for families across the county.

The fair is encouraging residents to provide feedback on the proposed school calendar options before the April 30 deadline. Organizers say community input will play a role in determining how the calendar may impact the future of the event and its role in the county.
