Montgomery County Bill Targets Police Applicants With ICE Ties

Montgomery County Councilmember Evan Glass has introduced the Continued Excellence in Public Service Act, legislation that would require additional background review for applicants to the Montgomery County Police Department who previously participated in federal immigration enforcement efforts on or after January 21, 2025.

The proposal is intended to expand upon existing hiring standards by requiring further review of applicants’ prior roles in immigration-related operations.

Supporters say the legislation aims to strengthen trust between law enforcement and the County’s immigrant communities by ensuring that police hiring practices align with local values. The bill builds on previous County legislation related to immigration and public safety, while officials note that MCPD already maintains rigorous screening processes for recruits. The proposal will be considered by the County Council as part of its legislative agenda.

“We’ve seen the chaos and fear ICE operations are creating in communities across our country,” said Councilmember Glass. “Public safety depends on trust. That means upholding MCPD’s rigorous hiring standards while making clear that our officers are here to serve and protect every resident — not to carry out federal immigration enforcement. When immigrant families trust our officers, our entire community is safer.”
