Governor Wes Moore Visits Montgomery County to Mark Major Purple Line Milestone

Governor Wes Moore visited Montgomery County on Thursday as part of his statewide “Delivering for Maryland” tour, where he joined transportation officials and elected leaders to mark the completion of the final segment of Purple Line rail at the future 16th Street–Woodside Station.

The milestone completes more than 16 miles of track connecting Bethesda and New Carrollton across Montgomery and Prince George’s counties. State officials said the project is now nearly 90 percent complete and will move into the next phase of testing and station construction ahead of a projected passenger opening in late 2027.

During the event, officials highlighted the Purple Line’s expected impact on regional transit, economic development, and connectivity between communities. The Moore administration also announced a $3 million investment in Montgomery County businesses located near Purple Line stations, along with continued grant funding for businesses impacted by construction. State leaders said nearly $2.6 million has already been distributed to approximately 250 local businesses through the Purple Line Small Business Grant program.

Following the Purple Line event, Governor Moore visited Max’s Best Ice Cream in Bethesda, a business focused on providing employment opportunities for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities through a partnership with Best Buddies International. The visit included meetings with employees and student interns from Walt Whitman High School’s Learning for Independence program.
