New Report Ranks Maryland 3rd in Reading Recovery, 5th in Math

Maryland Governor Wes Moore announced that Maryland ranks among the nation’s leaders in post-pandemic academic recovery, according to the newly released 2025 Education Scorecard compiled by researchers from Harvard, Stanford, and Dartmouth. The report ranks Maryland 3rd in the nation for student growth in reading and 5th in math between 2022 and 2025.

State officials also highlighted improvements in chronic absenteeism, which dropped from 31.1% in 2022 to 25.5% in 2025. Several Maryland school districts were recognized for strong gains, including Baltimore City, Frederick County, Worcester County, Anne Arundel County, St. Mary’s County, Dorchester County, and Harford County.

The Moore administration said the state is continuing to invest heavily in education, including a historic $10.1 billion K-12 education budget. Funding includes investments in community schools, school construction projects, teacher vacancy reduction efforts, and literacy and math coaching programs aimed at sustaining academic recovery statewide.
