New Bill Would Ban Street Racing and Street Takeovers

The Montgomery County Council is scheduled to introduce Bill 27-26 on Tuesday, June 16, which would prohibit participation in unlawful street racing and street takeovers on public highways and roadways.

Sponsored by Councilmember Andrew Friedson, the legislation would also define terms related to illegal racing activities and establish penalties for violations.

The proposal follows recent state legislation enacted by the Maryland General Assembly that increased penalties for racing, speed contests and exhibition driving. County officials said Bill 27-26 is intended to align Montgomery County law with state law by prohibiting unlawful speed contests, stunt driving, exhibition driving and race contests. A public hearing on the bill is scheduled for July 14.
