Maryland Expands Cheese Recall Over Listeria Concerns

The Maryland Department of Health has expanded its consumer advisory for Clover Hill Dairy and is urging consumers, retailers and restaurants not to eat, sell or serve any cheese products made by the Mechanicsville-based company due to possible contamination with Listeria monocytogenes.

The action follows a previous advisory issued June 3 for the dairy’s ricotta and requesón products and the suspension of the facility’s operating license on May 30. The recall applies to all Clover Hill Dairy cheeses, including products sold under other brand names such as KESSO, Quesos La Ricura, Izalco, De Mi Pueblo and Rio Lindo.

Health officials said nine people across multiple states have been linked to the outbreak strain, including one Maryland resident who died in 2023. Clover Hill Dairy products were distributed in Maryland, Virginia, Washington, D.C., New York, New Jersey and North Carolina. Listeria can cause serious illness, particularly in pregnant women, older adults, young children and people with weakened immune systems. Consumers who have purchased affected products are advised to discard them immediately and contact a healthcare provider if they develop symptoms consistent with listeriosis.
