Gaithersburg Installs Wind Phone for Those Grieving Loved Ones

The City of Gaithersburg has installed a new Wind Phone in the Kentlands area, providing residents with a quiet space to reflect, remember and connect with loved ones who have passed away.

A Wind Phone is a disconnected telephone placed in a peaceful setting that allows visitors to speak freely, share memories or express thoughts as part of the grieving process. The installation is the fourth Wind Phone in Maryland and the second in Montgomery County.

The project was inspired by Gaithersburg resident Meaghann Diez, who wanted to honor her late daughter, Hailey. The City partnered with The Little Wind Phone Project, a nonprofit dedicated to bringing Wind Phones to public spaces, while youth from the Robertson Park Youth Center helped design the phone with butterfly and blue-themed elements reflecting Hailey’s interests. The Wind Phone was installed on May 29, Hailey’s birthday, and is now open to the public.
