Meeting Planned on “Forever Chemicals” Detected in North Potomac

Montgomery County’s Department of Environmental Protection and Department of Health and Human Services will host a virtual community meeting from 7 to 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday, July 1, to provide updates and answer questions about PFAS contamination near Great Seneca Highway and Key West Avenue in North Potomac.

The meeting follows the County’s recent public health advisory after the Maryland Department of the Environment detected elevated levels of perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), commonly known as “forever chemicals,” in a small stream and stormwater pond in the area. Officials said the advisory was issued out of an abundance of caution and is intended to help protect public health.

Speakers will include DEP Director Jennifer Macedonia, DEP Watershed Division Chief Amy Stevens, Montgomery County Health Officer Dr. Kisha Davis and WSSC Water PFAS Program Manager Laura O’Donnell. The meeting is intended for residents who were unable to attend the June 17 in-person meeting or who have additional questions about the contamination and health advisory.
