July 4 Weather Alert: Severe Thunderstorm Watch Issued

The National Weather Service has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Watch for Montgomery County that remains in effect until 10 p.m. on Saturday, July 4, while an Extreme Heat Watch is also in effect throughout the day, creating potentially dangerous conditions for outdoor Independence Day celebrations.

The Severe Thunderstorm Watch means conditions are favorable for damaging wind gusts, large hail, frequent lightning and heavy rainfall. Meanwhile, the Extreme Heat Watch warns that heat index values, or “feels like” temperatures, could reach 110 degrees during the afternoon and evening hours.

The alerts cover all of Montgomery County, including Bethesda, Gaithersburg, Germantown, Rockville and Silver Spring. Residents attending outdoor events or fireworks displays are encouraged to stay hydrated, limit prolonged sun exposure, monitor weather conditions closely and be prepared to seek shelter quickly if severe weather develops.
