Residents are urged to take extra precautions if working or spending extended periods outdoors. Whenever possible, strenuous activities should be scheduled for the early morning or late evening. Officials also recommend drinking plenty of water, staying in air-conditioned spaces, avoiding direct sunlight, and checking on older adults, neighbors, and others who may be vulnerable to the heat.
Health officials remind residents to watch for signs of heat-related illness, including shortness of breath, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, headaches, and flushed skin. Children and pets should never be left unattended in a vehicle, even for a short period, and should always have access to a cool environment and plenty of water.
