Montgomery County Council President Natali Fani-González, Vice President Marilyn Balcombe and Councilmember Laurie-Anne Sayles announced a new legislative approach to data center development, proposing to codify the county’s current six-month moratorium while advancing zoning restrictions on hyperscale facilities.
The Economic Development Committee will meet on July 22 to review two data center moratorium bills. If either bill is approved, it could move to the full County Council for action on July 28.
That same day, the Planning, Housing and Parks Committee will review a proposed amendment to Zoning Text Amendment 26-01 that would prohibit hyperscale data centers in all zoning districts while officials work on broader, long-term regulations.
