A Germantown man is facing charges after a woman injured in an alleged DUI crash earlier this month died from her injuries, according to the Metropolitan Police Department.
The crash occurred around 9 p.m. on Sunday, July 5, at the intersection of 14th Street and Independence Avenue SW in Washington, DC. Investigators say 79-year-old Virginia Voight, of Palmyra, New Jersey, was riding a motorized electric mobility scooter through the crosswalk when a white 2016 Ford F-150 turned right and struck her. She was flown to a local hospital by the U.S. Park Police helicopter but died from her injuries on July 12.
Police identified the driver as 55-year-old Michael Wayne Mills of Germantown. According to investigators, Mills continued driving after the collision until a member of the National Guard intervened and detained him until officers arrived. Mills was arrested at the scene and charged with Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol or Drugs and Leaving After Colliding. MPD said additional charges are pending as the investigation continues.
