Governor Wes Moore released a statement Tuesday after the Maryland General Assembly approved a constitutional amendment that, if ratified by voters, would clarify how the state’s congressional districts are drawn and place the final decision in the hands of Maryland voters.
The proposed amendment will appear on the November ballot, where voters will decide whether to adopt the changes to the Maryland Constitution.
“For over a year, I have warned that Donald Trump and Republicans across the country are working to rig the system, weaken voting rights, and make this pain permanent,” Moore said. “I am proud that today we united and took action.”
Moore said he continues to support national redistricting reform but argued that Maryland should not wait for federal action. He added that the constitutional amendment ensures the state remains engaged in the national conversation while allowing Maryland voters to have the final say.
“I look forward to working together to pass the amendment with a strong YES vote in November,” Moore said.
