Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) is facing an estimated $3 billion in deferred maintenance needs as the district works to maintain 211 active facilities encompassing approximately 26.5 million square feet of educational space.
District leaders presented the FY 2027 Comprehensive Maintenance and Operations Plan to the Montgomery County Board of Education, outlining current maintenance needs and longer-term strategies for keeping school buildings safe and functional.
The average MCPS school building is now 30.1 years old, and the district estimates approximately $560 million is needed annually for routine capital replacement. During FY 2026, maintenance teams addressed more than 76,000 work orders across the school system.
As part of its efforts to improve maintenance operations, MCPS is exploring a new computerized work order management system that would provide enhanced tracking and greater public access to information. The district said the goal is to shift more of its work from reactive repairs toward proactive and preventive maintenance.
Long-term strategies also include expanding apprenticeship opportunities for students, completing capital improvement projects during the summer months and increasing energy efficiency across aging facilities.
