Maryland State Police are investigating four fatal crashes that claimed seven lives across the state over the weekend, including a wrong-way collision on I-270 that killed a mother and daughter.
The first crash occurred around 2:14 a.m. Saturday on Maryland Route 91 in Carroll County. Police said a Volkswagen Jetta left the roadway and struck an embankment. The driver, 21-year-old Garrett Reid Luber of Hampstead, was pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators believe impairment may have been a factor.
Later Saturday, at approximately 6:46 p.m., a Ford Mustang traveling northbound in the southbound lanes of I-270 struck a Toyota Camry head-on just south of Democracy Boulevard. Toyota passengers Musammat Shamima Begum, 46, and her daughter, Areebah Jahin, 23, were killed. The Toyota’s 62-year-old driver and an 8-year-old girl were hospitalized, along with the Mustang driver, identified as 32-year-old Jose Caballero Nolasco of Germantown. Police believe impairment may have been a factor.
Two additional fatal crashes occurred Sunday. At approximately 4:14 a.m., a Toyota 4Runner allegedly ran a red light at Maryland Routes 152 and 147 and struck a Volkswagen Jetta, killing 40-year-old Christopher Larry Grimsley. Police also believe impairment may have been a factor in that collision.
Around 12:59 p.m., a Subaru Forester crossed the grass median of I-68 and entered the eastbound lanes, where it collided head-on with a Volkswagen Tiguan. Subaru occupants John Welin, 79, and Karen Berneck, 81, both of Illinois, were killed, along with Volkswagen passenger Thomas Stevao, 25, of Centreville, Virginia. Two other Volkswagen occupants were hospitalized, including one who was flown to a trauma center.
The Maryland State Police Crash Team continues to investigate all four collisions.
