Montgomery County Councilmembers Dawn Luedtke and Sidney Katz will host a town hall Wednesday, September 2, to discuss potential community impacts of a proposed change in how the county handles solid waste.
The Montgomery County Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) has proposed shifting to long-haul landfilling, which would involve transporting county waste by truck to an out-of-county landfill. The approach would replace the current system of primarily transporting waste by train to the county’s Resource Recovery Facility, commonly known as the incinerator, and would allow that facility to close.
The proposed change would bring additional operations to the Shady Grove Transfer Station, potentially including increased truck traffic and a new Advanced Waste Processing facility. Luedtke and Katz represent communities surrounding the transfer station, including Rockville, Derwood, Shady Grove and Washington Grove.
“It is essential that the community understands the options and potential impacts of the proposed solid waste plans,” Katz said. “As the Council begins its work this fall, we are committed to getting resident feedback on priorities, concerns and expectations.”
The town hall will take place from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the MCDOT Highway Services Depot, 17000 Crabbs Branch Way in Rockville. DEP representatives will give a presentation and answer questions from community members.
The County Council is expected to further discuss the proposal and its potential impact on future capital budgets and the county’s Ten-Year Comprehensive Solid Waste Management Plan this fall.
