Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich issued a statement following the death of Gloria Steinem, remembering the longtime feminist activist and writer for her role in advancing women’s rights and equality.
Steinem, who died Wednesday at age 92, was a journalist, author and activist who became one of the most prominent leaders of the modern women’s movement. She co-founded Ms. magazine and spent more than six decades advocating for gender equality and women’s rights.
Elrich released the following statement:
“I am saddened by the death of Gloria Steinem, whose courage and activism helped change the lives of generations of women and made our country a fairer and more equitable place.
“Gloria Steinem understood that women’s rights were fundamental human rights. The movement she helped lead opened doors in education, employment, government, and countless other parts of American life while challenging discrimination that had been accepted for far too long. All of us have benefited from that progress.
“Her legacy is also evident here in Montgomery County. For more than 50 years, our Commission for Women has carried forward the work championed by Gloria and other feminist trailblazers by advocating for equality, opportunity, safety, and women’s full participation in our community. I appreciate the generations of commissioners, advocates, and residents who have sustained that work.
“Gloria Steinem helped move our country forward. She did not shy away from challenging the accepted ways, was willing to ruffle feathers, and spoke the truth even when ridiculed or questioned. The best way to honor her is to recognize how much progress has been made while at the same time continuing to speak up, speak out, and do the work that remains.”
