Gaithersburg Mayor Jud Ashman, who has served as mayor since 2014, is expected to announce his conditional resignation during the Mayor and City Council meeting on September 8 as he runs for the Montgomery County Council District 3 seat in the November 3 general election.
Ashman’s resignation would take effect November 9, pending the outcome of the election. The City Council plans to select a new mayor from among its current members on October 5, with the selection expected to be announced the following day. The new mayor would be sworn in November 9 and serve until the November 2027 city election.
The appointment would also create a vacancy on the City Council. Applications from qualified Gaithersburg residents will be accepted beginning September 9 and are due by 5 p.m. on October 2. Selected applicants will be invited to speak at the October 19 Mayor and City Council meeting and participate in interviews.
The Council expects to select the new council member on October 26, with the appointee also scheduled to be sworn in November 9 and serve until the November 2027 election. Ashman’s resignation and the appointments are conditional on the outcome of the November 3 County Council election.
