Maryland has released its statewide vaccine schedules and recommendations for children and adults for the 2026-2027 respiratory virus season, providing updated guidance on COVID-19, flu, RSV and other routine vaccinations.
The Maryland Department of Health said the recommendations are based on current evidence and guidance from medical organizations including the American Academy of Pediatrics, American Academy of Family Physicians and American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.
The guidelines were issued under new authority provided by the Vax Act, which was signed into law earlier this year. Under the law, Maryland’s health secretary can establish official state recommendations for immunizations, screenings and preventive services. State-recommended routine vaccines are required to be covered by insurers with no out-of-pocket costs, and pharmacists can administer recommended vaccines to anyone age 3 and older without a prescription.
“We recognize Marylanders are facing back-to-school germs and the upcoming respiratory virus season, all while navigating shifting vaccine guidance from the federal government,” Maryland Health Secretary Dr. Meena Seshamani said. “Through the Vax Act and our Maryland recommendations, we are reaffirming our commitment to high-quality, accessible care rooted in science and giving families peace of mind that essential vaccinations are safe and will remain affordable and available right in their communities.”
In addition to seasonal COVID-19, flu and RSV vaccines, state health officials continue to recommend routine immunizations including the measles, mumps and rubella vaccine and hepatitis B vaccine beginning with the birth dose.
The new recommendations do not establish additional vaccine mandates, and Maryland’s existing vaccination requirements for children entering schools remain unchanged.
According to the state, more than 96% of Maryland kindergarten students are consistently reported as vaccinated. Uninsured and underinsured residents can receive recommended vaccines at no cost through the Maryland Vaccines for Children Program and Maryland Vaccine Program.
