A Maryland woman has been sentenced to 12 months and one day in federal prison for attempting to steal more than $1.1 million from the IRS by filing false tax returns.
According to court documents, Kendra Scarborough of Oxon Hill filed three false tax returns between December 2019 and March 2020 in the names of purported trusts she controlled. The returns sought more than $1.1 million in refunds, resulting in the IRS issuing $412,000 to one of the trusts. Prosecutors said Scarborough used some of the money to pay her home mortgage and other creditors.
Scarborough pleaded guilty to theft of government funds. U.S. District Judge Deborah L. Boardman also ordered her to pay $410,117.44 in restitution to the IRS and forfeit the remaining proceeds from the tax refund in her bank account.
IRS Criminal Investigation investigated the case, which was prosecuted by Trial Attorney Melissa Siskind of the Justice Department’s Fraud Division.
