Maryland has been named to Lonely Planet’s Best in Travel 2027 list, placing the state among 50 destinations and experiences selected from around the world.
The annual list, selected by Lonely Planet’s global community of travel experts, highlights Maryland’s combination of history, culture, outdoor recreation, food and waterways.
“Maryland is a place where history, culture, nature and innovation come together, and this recognition from Lonely Planet gives travelers around the world another reason to experience it for themselves,” Governor Wes Moore said.
According to the state, Maryland welcomed 47.4 million visitors in 2025. Lonely Planet’s Best in Travel 2027 list focuses on destinations and experiences offering opportunities for slower travel, meaningful experiences and exploration beyond more familiar destinations.
The recognition comes ahead of the 200th anniversary of American railroading in 2027. Maryland plans to commemorate the anniversary by highlighting its railroad heritage, including the historic Baltimore & Ohio Railroad, railroad communities and rail trails.
