Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services (MCFRS) responded to a multi-vehicle collision and significant fuel spill on the Inner Loop of I-495 between University Boulevard and New Hampshire Avenue Monday afternoon.
According to MCFRS spokesperson Pete Piringer, a tractor-trailer apparently experienced a mechanical issue that caused fuel to spill across approximately 800 feet of roadway, creating hazardous conditions and resulting in collisions involving possibly as many as a dozen vehicles.
Approximately 20 people were evaluated by MCFRS personnel. A HazMat team also responded to assist with the fuel spill.
Multiple lanes are blocked, including three right lanes past University Boulevard, and drivers are advised to expect significant delays and seek an alternate route.
