Kellem Coffee officially opened Tuesday, October 13, inside Commas Food Hall at Ellsworth Place in downtown Silver Spring, bringing traditional Ethiopian coffee, East African breakfast dishes and other morning offerings to the food hall.
Led by owner Chef Bilisee, Kellem Coffee specializes in Ethiopian coffee brewed using the traditional jebena method, which involves a distinctive clay coffee pot and coffee beans sourced from Ethiopia’s highlands. The menu also features East African breakfast favorites, including chechebsa (spiced flatbread), ful (seasoned fava beans) and samosas, along with teas, muffins, scones and other pastries.
The new addition further strengthens downtown Silver Spring’s reputation as what we’ve called Maryland’s coffee capital. With dozens of coffee shops concentrated in a highly walkable area, Silver Spring offers an unusually diverse coffee scene, from traditional Ethiopian cafés to modern espresso bars and specialty coffee shops. Kellem Coffee joins local favorites such as Kefa Café, Black Lion Café, Prime Coffee & Bakery, Sheger Spring Café and Kaldi’s Social House, among many others.
Commas Food Hall opened last year on the third level of Ellsworth Place and recently celebrated its grand reopening on September 26. The approximately 13,000-square-foot food hall features a variety of locally operated food and beverage concepts, including J&J Mex-Taqueria, Nips Juice House, Momo Hub, The Champs Kitchen and Tokoa Cheesesteaks.
