Bethesda-based nonprofit Alley Cat Allies is calling on people around the world to take action to protect cats and kittens in recognition of Global Cat Day and National Feral Cat Day, both observed Friday, October 16.
The organization, founded in 1990, created National Feral Cat Day in 2001 and Global Cat Day in 2017 to raise awareness about community cats and encourage humane approaches to their care.
“On Global Cat Day and National Feral Cat Day, we are sending a strong message that Cats Are Community™ around the globe, coexist with wildlife, and deserve to thrive wherever they call home,” said Coryn Julien, Program Communications Officer at Alley Cat Allies.
On October 15 and 16, the organization is coordinating several initiatives, including providing food and care for community cats in Prince George’s County, stocking a free cat food bank in Richmond, Virginia, hosting a Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) clinic in Texas, and providing medical care for cats in Puerto Rico.
Alley Cat Allies is encouraging residents to participate by supporting local spay and neuter programs, helping community cats through TNR, sharing educational resources, or contacting local officials about humane cat protection policies.
The organization has more than 1.8 million supporters and works with caregivers, veterinarians, shelters, and animal protection groups to promote humane treatment of cats.
