The Montgomery County Council is scheduled to vote on a resolution opposing proposed federal changes to the 2030 Census on Tuesday, October 27, followed by a press conference featuring County leaders.
The resolution calls for the withdrawal of proposed rule changes by the U.S. Department of Commerce and U.S. Census Bureau that would exclude certain noncitizens from the census count and eliminate some demographic questions.
According to the County, the proposed changes, published September 10, would exclude noncitizens who are not lawful permanent residents and remove self-reported questions concerning race, ethnicity and sexual orientation, among other revisions.
Council leaders argue that the changes could affect federal funding allocations, redistricting and the accuracy of population data used for state and local planning. The resolution emphasizes the importance of counting all residents regardless of citizenship status. Council President Natali Fani-González, County Executive Marc Elrich, other Councilmembers and community leaders are expected to participate in the press conference.
The Council vote is scheduled for approximately 11:15 a.m., with the press conference expected to begin at 11:30 a.m. in the third-floor Council Chamber at 100 Maryland Avenue in Rockville.
