The City of Rockville is considering a proposal to annex 66.4 acres of land surrounding the Shady Grove Metro station, which would expand the city’s northern boundary.
The Rockville Mayor and Council will hold a public hearing on the proposal at 6:30 pm on Monday, November 16. The proposed annexation includes land owned by the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) and CSX Transportation Inc.
The city initially introduced the annexation petition in October 2023, proposing to incorporate approximately 107.9 acres on both the east and west sides of the Metro station. Following discussions in May 2025 and April 2026, the proposal was reduced to include only the western portion of WMATA’s property and CSX Transportation land.
The public hearing will be held in person at Rockville City Hall and virtually. Residents interested in providing testimony can register through the city’s website or contact the City Clerk’s Office at 240-314-8280 by 10 am on the day of the hearing.
Additional information about the proposal is available on the city’s Development Watch website.
