Governor Larry Hogan Posthumously Pardons 34 Victims of Lynchings That Occurred in Maryland
On Saturday, Governor Larry Hogan posthumously pardoned 34 victims of lynchings that occurred in the state Maryland between 1854 and 1933 who were denied due process.
Hogan signed the order at a memorial event for Howard Cooper that was hosted by the Maryland Lynching Memorial Project.
From the project’s website: “Just after midnight on Monday, July 13, 1885, a 15-year old boy named Howard Cooper was dragged from a cell in the old Baltimore County Jail by 75 masked men and hanged from a sycamore tree next to the building. His was one of at least 40 racial terror lynchings in the state between 1854 and 1933.”
“In the interest of equal justice under law, I have made the decision to grant a posthumous pardon today for Howard Cooper” Hogan said.
