Montgomery County to Host Online Conversation About Black Youth Suicide and Mental Health June 2

Per Montgomery County:

Montgomery County residents are invited to an online conversation about Black youth suicide and mental health challenges during the pandemic on Wednesday, June 2.

The session is part of a series, Wellness Community Events: Healing and Holding On—One Conversation at a Time for the Community, which is focused on mental health and wellness issues affecting the community as the COVID-19 pandemic continues. The conversation will be held from 6 to 7:30 p.m.

During this event, participants will learn about the impact of the pandemic on the mental health of Black youth.  Topics for discussion will include:

  • Statistics on Black youth suicide rates
  • Signs and symptoms of suicidal ideation and mental health needs in youth
  • Risk and Protective Factors for suicide in Black populations
  • Attitudes and perceptions about suicide and mental health in Black communities
  • Strategies and resources for Black youth and families to address mental health and suicide

Tammy Blake, a licensed clinical social worker at the Montgomery County Department of Health and Human Services will be the presenter. Blake is a therapist for Child and Adolescent Behavioral Health Services, Family Intervention Services. Child and Adolescent Behavioral Health Services provides mental health treatment for children and adolescents experiencing emotional and behavioral challenges as well as substance use screenings and referrals.

In this role, Blake provides home/community-based telehealth assessments, case management, and individual and family therapy to youth involved with the Department of Juvenile Services. These clients can be either voluntary or Court-referred. She has been providing mental health services to children and adolescents for more than six years.
