WSSC Responding to a Sewer Overflow in Heavily Wooded Area in Bethesda
Per WSSC:
WSSC released a statement today saying that they responded this morning to a collapsed sewer pipe near 9240 Vendome Drive in Bethesda.
The total volume of this overflow is estimated to be in excess of 10,000 gallons.
Signs are currently posted alerting residents to avoid the area. WSSC believes the cause of the collapsed pipe is due to “flushable” wipes were wipes.
According to WSSC, “When crews arrived on the scene, they discovered a significant amount of wipes overflowing from a manhole. Many companies market personal hygiene wipes as flushable, however, these products do not break down and disintegrate in the sewer system like toilet paper. The accumulation of these wipes can lead to blockages in sewer mains, which can cause SSOs. WSSC Water reminds residents to keep the wipes out of the pipesand flush only the three Ps: pee, poop and paper (toilet paper).”
