Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) Superintendent Dr. Monifa McKnight released the following community message on January 1, 2024:

“Happy New Year, MCPS community!

As we step into 2024, I hope your holidays were both wonderful and rejuvenating. Looking ahead to the remainder of the school year, let’s embrace the potential for greatness that lies ahead of us, look out for one another, and work together toward a brighter future for all students.

During each of the past 25 years that I have served as an educator, crossing into the new year has offered a chance for reflection on the first half of the school year, and renewal as we enter its second part.

This year, I invite you to join me in my resolutions to:

  • Remain focused and motivated, constantly striving towards excellence;

  • Actively listen to best comprehend how we can better assist both students and staff;

  • Encourage and support those around us – promoting care to conquer divisiveness, and to stimulate a more positive and interconnected community; and

  • Strike a sense of balance along the way – so that we look after ourselves through self-care and well-being without sacrificing hard work and determination.

I know we are capable of doing so – because I have experienced it firsthand: In the midst of my recent serious health condition, the many well-wishes that I received reminded me that one of the many things our community has in common is just how deeply we are there for one another.

Together, we fulfill our role as leaders, educators, parents and caregivers by modeling what we want for our children as they grow into the leaders of tomorrow throughout the year ahead.

In partnership,

Dr. Monifa B. McKnight
Superintendent of Schools”
