Maryland Attorney General’s Statement on United States Supreme Court’s Ruling Throwing Out Bankruptcy Plan for Opioid Manufacturer Purdue Pharma

The Maryland Attorney General’s Office issued the following news release on Thursday, June 27:

In response to today’s United States Supreme Court’s 5-4 ruling in Harrington v. Purdue Pharma L.P., Attorney General Anthony G. Brown issued the following statement:

“The Supreme Court’s ruling today shuts the door on the abusive practice of granting releases in bankruptcy to the wealthy non-bankrupt, a practice that has shielded wrongdoers whose misconduct harms the public. I am proud of the role my office played in objecting to the releases during the Purdue court proceedings. The Supreme Court’s decision ensures that non-debtors cannot shield themselves from taking responsibility through the bankruptcy process. I will continue to pursue wrongdoers who harm
Marylanders.”
