These events have generally been met with mixed reviews based on the many vocal critics on social media posts about the events, but have seen over 300 hundred guns turned at the two previous gun buyback events in Rockville. Over 150 were turned in at an event in Germantown earlier this year.
Per the news release: “Rockville offers an opportunity for community members to dispose of unwanted firearms voluntarily, anonymously and safely with a gun buyback event from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 17 at RedGate Park, 14500 Avery Road.
The Rockville City Police Department, in partnership with the Montgomery County State’s Attorney’s Office, sponsors the event, which allows community members to voluntarily drive up and drop off firearms with no identification needed and no questions asked.
Community members will receive a $100 Visa gift card for functioning handguns, rifles and shotguns, and $200 in Visa gift cards for functioning assault-style weapons and privately manufactured firearms (ghost guns). Gift card quantities are limited and subject to availability. RCPD will maintain the ultimate determination on the eligible firearms for gift card issuance. Non-functioning firearms and ammunition will be accepted with no exchange of compensation.
