An auto theft suspect is in custody this morning after a FOX 5 helicopter alerted Montgomery County Police of the suspect’s location. According to MCPD, “At approximately 5:55 a.m., 2nd District officers were dispatched to Rolling Road in Chevy Chase. Neighbors witnessed suspicious vehicles and people checking (pulling on the handle of) car doors.
A 2D officer observed three suspicious vehicles on Leland and Woodbine Streets, and as the officer followed, all three vehicles drove off. The vehicles, a black Kia, Toyota Highlander and silver Range/Land Rover stopped at Beach and East West Highway. A brief pursuit was initiated, and during that pursuit, the black Kia drove over a median, causing the tires to blow out.
All three cars continued on 495, and the pursuit was called off at Georgia Avenue. During this time, a Fox 5 news helicopter was following the pursuit and observed the driver of the Kia exit the disabled vehicle and walk to a bus stop at University and New Hampshire Avenues, where the suspect boarded a Metro bus.
The Fox 5 helicopter followed the bus, and called the Montgomery County Emergency Communications Center, with the location of the bus and possible suspect.
Officers located and stopped the bus at the Wheaton Metro station, and the adult male suspect was taken into custody. The drivers and occupants of the other vehicles remain outstanding. The Kia and Toyota Highlander were reported stolen out of Chevy Chase. More information will be released as it becomes available.”
