Beyond MoCo: Union Chesapeake Seafood House to Take Over Phillips Seafood Location in Ocean City

Back in December we let you know that Phillips Seafood would be permanently closing after 66 years in its iconic Ocean City location. The seafood company announced that it decided to sell the property that was home to Phillips Crab House at 2004 Philadelphia Avenue between 20th and 21st Street in Ocean City.

Yesterday, it was announced that Union Chesapeake Seafood House will be taking over the space.

Below you’ll see the announcement from owners Frank Raffo, Jonathan Latta, and Eddie Johnson:

“We would be lying if we said this was a dream come true……there is no way we could’ve even dreamed this one!

It’s an honor to announce that we have officially taken over operations at the Original Phillips Crab House Building located at 21st in Ocean City, MD.

We want to thank Paul McKinley and the entire Phillips family for their help and support over the last month or so. This experience has been surreal thus far and our team is very excited to earn the opportunity that is before us.

Union Chesapeake Seafood House will not veer far from Bryce and Shirley’s legendary concept. The upstairs will feature an All You Can Eat Seafood, Prime Rib & Blue Crab Buffet! The downstairs will be a full-service restaurant/crab house specializing in the finest Seafood that Maryland has to offer.

Once again, it’s truly an honor and a blessing to be a part of keeping this building standing in Ocean City. We love this town; we love this business! Union Chesapeake Seafood House, coming soon!”

In 1914, Augustus E. Phillips established the company’s first seafood processing plant on Hooper’s Island in Maryland’s Chesapeake Bay. The A.E. Phillips packing plant processed seafood from many of the watermen in the region.

In 1956, after a surplus season of crabs, son Brice Phillips and wife Shirley opened the first “crab shack” in Ocean City, Maryland. Brice and Shirley began building a new dining room each year at Phillips Crab House until it finally seated 1400 people.

Phillips Seafood Restaurants currently has 4 other company-owned restaurants along the eastern coast of the United States, as well as a network of franchise locations in airports, travel plazas, casinos and sporting arenas.
