Detectives Investigate Attempted Carjacking in Silver Spring; Surveillance Video of Suspect Released

Gaithersburg, MD – Detectives from the Montgomery County Department of Police – Major Crimes Division are investigating an attempted carjacking that occurred in the 900 block of Philadelphia Ave. in Silver Spring on Wednesday, December 22. Detectives have released surveillance video of the Hispanic male suspect and are asking for the public’s assistance in identifying him.

At approximately 1:35 p.m., 3rd District Officers responded to the location for the report of an attempted carjacking that just occurred.

The investigation by detectives determined that the male suspect approached the female victim who was standing by her vehicle. The suspect approached her and demanded her car key. The victim refused to give the suspect her car key. At that point, the suspect struck the victim in the chest and neck. A good Samaritan heard the struggle and intervened in the physical altercation by shouting at the suspect. The suspect then fled the scene without obtaining any property from the victim.

Detectives reviewed the surveillance footage of nearby residences and obtained a physical description of the suspect.

The victim described the suspect as an adult Hispanic male with a beard. The suspect was also carrying a messenger bag.
