Driver Loses Life Following September 2021 Collision

Gaithersburg, MD – A 61-year-old Chevy Chase woman involved in a September 23, 2021 collision has succumbed to her injuries.

Mary Frances Walsh died on February 3, 2022, as a result of injuries she sustained following a single vehicle collision on Montgomery Ave. near East West Hwy.

On Thursday, September 23, at approximately 6:53 p.m., 2nd District Officers and Montgomery County Fire Rescue responded to the location for the report of a vehicle that crashed into a tree.

Walsh was trapped in a 2014 Audi Q5. The front end of the vehicle was in flames and the cabin was filled with smoke. With the assistance of a good samaritan, an off-duty Montgomery County Police officer removed Walsh from the vehicle. A 14-year-old passenger was able to exit the vehicle after the collision.  The passenger was transported to an area hospital with minor injuries.

Walsh was transported to an area hospital with serious injuries and had been receiving medical treatment since the collision occurred. In February 2022, she was admitted to an area hospital for complications stemming from her injuries. Detectives from the Montgomery County Department of Police – Collision Reconstruction Unit (CRU) are now investigating this collision as a fatality.

The Collision Reconstruction Unit continues to investigate this collision. Anyone with information regarding this collision is asked to contact CRU detectives at 240-773-6620.
