A new exhibit by the artists of the VisAbility Art Lab opens at The Seneca (55 West Gude Drive) in Rockville this Saturday.  The VisAbility Art Lab is a studio program that “provides artists with autism and intellectual and developmental disabilities a place and the resources to create art and develop the skills necessary to work in the arts.” The exhibit will be open daily from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM through Friday, April 26. We are delighted to announce that more than 30 pieces of art will go on exhibit at The Seneca in Rockville on Saturday, March 25 – works created by the artists of VisArts’ VisAbility Art Lab. These highly talented painters, sketchers, and sculptors have two things in common: they are artists with autism or other intellectual and developmental disabilities and they are successfully pursuing careers in art.

VisArts created VisAbility Art Lab eight years ago for neurodiverse artists to make art at their own pace and gain experience applying for and creating exhibitions. Their work is routinely juried into shows and sells briskly. Two Lab artists recently sold their art to Amazon Prime for use in promotional materials for As We See It, a series which follows the lives of three adults on the autism spectrum as they navigate their jobs, love lives, and other relationships.

“Many of our members are passionate about art and want us to feature local artists,” says Sara Woodward, Community Life Director at the Rockville senior living community. “Our partnership with VisArts helps us to meet that demand, and we are especially excited about this show.”

“VisAbility Art Lab is not about therapy, it’s about preparing adults with disabilities for a career in art,” says program director Elaine Parks. “Creating art is therapeutic for everybody. For our lab participants, art is their superpower.”

The VisAbility Art Lab Exhibit at The Seneca is open to the public. All artwork is for sale.
