MoCo’s First Wawa Granted Final Site Plan Approval

Update Thursday, December 2nd: Wawa was granted approval for its final site plan by the City of Gaithersburg’s Planning Commission. The approval was based on four conditions, that include:

  • Working with staff to resolve more locations for bike parking
  • Cleaning up the plan for accessory service locations (ice storage, etc.)
  • Enhancing porch columns on the front elevation
  • Updates to the retaining walls

Wawa will now be able to apply for building permits, which would allow construction to begin over two years after the decision to open in Gaithersburg was made.

Back in 2019 we reported that Wawa was coming to Gaithersburg and would be taking over the old Becraft Antiques location on 355, across from Gaithersburg High School (405 S Frederick Ave).

WAWA recently requested final site plan approval for the construction of a new 5,060 square foot retail building and associated automobile filling station (gas station). It will take place tomorrow, Wednesday, December 1st at 7:30pm.

If approved, the start of construction should begin this winter.

Public opposition to the site led to the development being stalled after a group of 14 community members filed an administrative appeal in the Montgomery County Circuit Court.

The opponents of the site had stated that the Wawa does not align with MoCo’s master plan and would generate traffic and noise annoyances for residents in the surrounding areas.

Back in April, Judge Donald Beachley struck down the appeal, clearing the way for development to begin.

Per the City of Gaithersburg:

WAWA is requesting schematic development plan approval for the construction of a new WAWA automobile filling station and 5,060 square foot retail building.

During the August 5, 2019 Joint Public Hearing there were comments raised on the schematic development plan application from the City Council, Planning Commission & public . The Applicant has provided responses to those questions which can be found in the following document:

Good Evening !
Can we please get a Starbucks at the three years empty retail space at New Hampshire and Randolph Road ? In a shopping center next to a gas station and lots of traffic ! Worth a look at least ?
