Former MCPS Student Publishes Book She Wrote While in Elementary School

Afshan Mizrahi is a published children’s author from Montgomery County. The book she published, Fairyland Horror, was written while she attended Mill Creek Towne Elementary School, an MCPS school in Derwood.

While in 5th grade, Afshan had a creative writing assignment where she needed to write a short story and draw pictures. It was then that Fairyland Horror came to life.

Fairyland Horror is a tale about fairies who receive a mysterious letter and need to use their powers and work together as a team to make sure that Fairyland is safe.

This book is intended for young readers, as the story contains many pictures with vibrant colors and an easytofollow story line. The book emphasizes the importance of teamwork for the best result in a tough situation.

“The best part? Fairyland Horror inspires children to be creative and write stories that they too can someday publish.” said Mizrahi, who wrote the story when she was ten years old.

From the time when the book was published in January, Mizrahi has provided frequent book reads at local Montgomery County elementary schools, attended book festivals, hosted Zoom read-along events, and even created PPE equipment and other handmade items using graphics from the book.
