Gaithersburg Seeks “Fixers” for Annual Fix-It Fair

The Environmental Affairs Committee is planning a second Fix-It Fair on Saturday, June 3, 2023, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Casey Community Center. Residents are invited to make an appointment to bring in personal items in need of repair, such as toasters, bicycles or jewelry. The repair will be performed for free. The “right to repair” and ability to fix material is crucial to transitioning away from a disposal society. Fixers are key to saving useful materials from landfills. The City is seeking volunteer “fixers” with experience in:

  • Small Appliances
  • Lamps
  • Jewelry
  • Textiles/Clothing
  • Tool Sharpening (electric mower blades, pruners etc.)

Volunteer fixers will be provided with basic information on each appointment up to two weeks in advance of the event. Fixers must provide the necessary equipment and tools for their area of expertise. The City will provide:

  • Basic materials/disposables as needed to perform the repairs
  • Tables & area for repair work
  • Opportunity to advertise fixer repair businesses at the event
  • Coffee, beverages & a hot boxed lunch
  • A City of Gaithersburg T-shirt
  • Hold harmless waiver program

Event attendees will register online up to two weeks prior to the event. Bookings will be in 30-minute time slots. Attendees will be informed that each repair will occur during the allotted appointment time and that a complete fix is not guaranteed at this event. The 2022 event had 34 appointments and a 95% success rate. If you are interested in volunteering, contact Environmental Services by March 30, 2023. Please include the type of material you can repair & samples of your success.
