Jones Bridge Road Project Begins in North Chevy Chase

Maryland State Highway Administration contractors are beginning a roadway reconfiguration project on a half-mile stretch of Jones Bridge Road in North Chevy Chase.

In a written statement, Maryland Transportation Secretary Greg Slater wrote, “Improved access to Naval Support Activity Bethesda is vital to accommodate increased employment as a result of [the federal government’s Base Realignment and Closure.] These improvements will make this area more accessible and safer for employees and commuters, in any mode of travel.”

The project will include widening Jones Bridge Road to accommodate an additional left turn lane from eastbound Jones Bridge Road to northbound MD-185 (Connecticut Avenue) and Kensington Parkway.

Pedestrian safety improvements will include a new pedestrian refuge island in the median of Jones Bridge Road on the eastern side of the intersection, as well as a new shared-use path along Jones Bridge Road between Platt Ridge Drive and North Chevy Chase Elementary School. New medians and sidewalks will also be constructed along Jones Bridge between Montgomery Avenue and Montrose Drive.

Project construction is scheduled to be completed in 2023. More information can be viewed online on the Maryland State Highway Administration’s project webpage.
