The new restaurant is taking over the 325 square foot storefront that was formerly home to Tex-Mex restaurant Peppers, located next to Vasili’s in the Kentlands. It will specialize in breakfast sandwiches and will have a few tables available for outdoor seating. Lapu Lapu is the sister restaurant of popular Rockville restaurant Kuya Ja’s Lechon Belly. According to their social media accounts, “No better day to announce this than #nationaleggday The day has come! (Almost!) Come join us for our soft opening this Sunday from 7am-3pm! We can’t wait to see you.” Lapu Lapu has been holding “pop ups” at Kuya Ja’s Lechon Belly on weekends over the past few months.
About: “Chef Ja’s dream has always been to bring the Philippines to you, one dish at a time. He kicked off his first concept, Kuya Ja’s Lechon Belly, in Rockville, Maryland which spotlights the famous Cebu-style Lechon belly. After receiving recognition and many accolades, he now wishes to help start your day off right with Filipino breakfast to go!
The question you should really be asking is WHO is Lapu Lapu? The name Lapu Lapu takes reference from a national hero of the Philippines. Lapu Lapu and his warriors famously defied and defeated the foreign invaders (such as Ferdinand Magellan) who were seeking to colonize the Philippines back in April of 1521. This was called the Battle of Mactan, which occured in the Visayas where our Chef/Owner Javier was born. Inspired by Lapu Lapu’s great feat, Chef Javier set his heart on a mission to help everyone win their own battles each and every day – starting with breakfast, the most important meal of the day!”

We mix our dough by hand and use a slow fermentation at room temperature to make a light and airy crust. Of course we only use the best ingredients available – spring water, artisan flours, organic san marzanos, mediterranean sea salt, and the mozz that we make daily. Our not so secret ingredient is the nixtamal we make from local corn. We add a little nixtamal to the dough for flavor, nutrition, and to help it hold up better in a box. Please don’t ask silly questions like what style pizza this is (Neopolitan, Roman, Detroit, NY, NJ, Chicago, Sicilian, etc). Imitation is is best left to chains and hacks.
