Maryland Is 2022’s 4th “Most Innovative State”, According to Study

With the U.S. projected to spent nearly $600 billion on research & development (R&D) in 2022, the personal-finance website WalletHub recently released its report on 2022’s Most & Least Innovative States.

Maryland came in 4th, ranking in the top 5 in five different categories. Nearby Washington D.C. came in 1st place on the list, while Virginia came in 6th.

WalletHub compared the 50 states and the District of Columbia across 22 key metrics. The data set ranges from share of STEM professionals to R&D spending per capita.

Innovation in Maryland (1=Most Innovative, 25=Avg.):

  • 3rd – Share of STEM Professionals
  • 5th – Projected STEM-Job Demand by 2028
  • 3rd – Share of Science & Engineering Graduates Aged 25+
  • 3rd – Share of Technology Companies
  • 5th – R&D Spending per Capita
  • 19th – Venture-Capital Funding per Capita
