Driver’s License and State ID Can Now be Added to iPhone and Apple Watch in Maryland

Maryland driver’s licenses and state-issued identity cards (IDs) can now be added to your Apple Wallet on iPhone and Apple Watch to provide an easy, private, and secure way for Maryland citizens to present their state ID. Currently, it can only be used with TSA, and various entities, including law enforcement, are not yet accepting Maryland Mobile ID.

Maryland Mobile ID is a voluntary, secure, digitized version of your MDOT MVA-issued driver’s license (DL) or identification card (ID) available in the Apple Wallet app on your iPhone and Apple Watch. Maryland Mobile ID offers even more security and privacy benefits than the physical state ID or driver’s license because Marylanders get to review the personal information they share with others and use biometric authentication with Face ID or Touch ID to authorize it. Maryland Mobile ID on iPhone and Apple Watch is currently the ONLY form of mobile phone-based identification that is recognized by MDOT MVA and it is only available to individuals that have a current, valid Maryland-issued driver’s license or ID card. You must have an eligible Maryland driver’s license or state-issued identification card.

To enroll and use Maryland Mobile ID:

  • You must have a valid and easily readable Maryland driver license or state-issued ID card.
    • iPhone 8 or later, or an Apple Watch Series 4 or later, with the latest version of iOS or watchOS
    • Face ID or Touch ID and two-factor authentication enabled
    • Signed in with Apple ID on device
    • Your device region set to United States

To get Maryland Mobile ID on your iPhone, just open the Apple Wallet app.

  1. On your iPhone, open the Apple Wallet app.
  2. Tap the Add (+) button.
  3. Tap Driver’s License or State ID and choose your state.
  4. Choose whether you want to add it to your iPhone only or to both your iPhone and paired Apple Watch.
  5. Follow the onscreen instructions to scan the front and back of your license or ID.Article: Add your driver’s license or state ID card to Apple WalletVideo: Add your driver’s license or state ID card to Apple WalletAfter your request has been approved, you will see your Maryland Mobile ID in the Apple Wallet app on your iPhone and Apple Watch. For step-by-step directions on adding your DL/ID to Apple Wallet, see the Add your drivers license or state ID to Apple Wallet support article.

Maryland Mobile ID is voluntary and serves as a companion to your physical, plastic Driver’s License/ Identification Card – it is not yet a replacement of the physical card, and you must continue to carry your physical Drivers License/Identification Card with you. This is determined by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA). Please visit TSA.gov for the most up to date support for IDs in Apple Wallet.
