MCPS celebrated excellence in autism services during the second annual Autism Unit Awards on May 24. Teachers, paraeducators, administrators, service providers, volunteers and substitutes were recognized. Awards included:
• Outstanding New Paraeducator: Given to paraeducators in their first two years with the autism program, who have demonstrated a commitment to excellence in their roles.
• Outstanding Paraeducator: Given to paraeducators who exemplify student-centered support to their classrooms, programs and school communities.
• Excellence in Paraeducator Leadership and Collaboration: Recognizing paraeducators who have shown an independent drive to mentor new team members.
• Outstanding New Teacher: Given to teachers in their first two years with the autism program, who have demonstrated a commitment to excellence in their roles.
• Teacher: Excellence in Instruction: Recognizing teachers who have demonstrated specific excellence in an area of autism instruction.
• Teacher: Excellence in Advocacy for Students: Recognizing teachers who have demonstrated excellence in serving as advocates for their students within their schools and communities.
• Teacher: Excellence in Leadership and Collaboration: Recognizing teachers who have shown an independent drive to mentor new team members.
• Outstanding General Educators: Given to those who have shown a commitment to fostering inclusive learning communities for students with autism.
• Outstanding Related Service Providers and Volunteers: Given to recognize the efforts of service providers and others, including occupational, physical and speech therapists, volunteers and substitutes.
• Outstanding Administrators: Recognizing principals, assistant principals or special education resource teachers who have shown an ongoing commitment to supporting teachers and students within school-based autism programs.
