MCPS: Graduations Begin June 1; Schedule, Speakers, and Locations

The 2022 high school commencement season is set to begin on Wednesday, June 1, and will end Tuesday, June 14. Graduation ceremonies will take place on individual high school campuses, at DAR Constitution Hall in Washington, D.C., and on the campuses of Mount St. Mary’s University and the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. More than 11,000 students are expected to receive their diplomas.

The ceremonies will include an array of commencement speakers, including TV reporters, politicians, educators, MCPS staff members and others.

Among those who will speak: Montgomery Blair High School alumna Jacqueline Hinman, CEO of CH2M, a Fortune 500 engineering company, who will speak at her alma mater; NBC News correspondent Kathy Park, who will speak at Springbrook High School; U.S. Congressman Jamie Raskin, who will address students at Albert Einstein and John. F. Kennedy high schools; Lucy A. Daglish, dean at the University of Maryland Philip Merrill College of Journalism, who will speak at Thomas S. Wootton High School; and Dr. Norvell Coots, retired U.S. Army Brigadier General, President and CEO of Holy Cross Health, and President and CEO, Maryland Region, Trinity Health, who will speak to graduating seniors at Winston Churchill High School.

Other speakers include:

  • Cecily Baskir, former mayor of Chevy Chase, Md., who will speak at Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School
  • John B. King, Jr., former U.S. Secretary of Education under President Barack Obama, who will speak at Clarksburg High School
  • Ashley Parker and Yasmeen Abutaleb, reporters at The Washington Post, who will speak at their alma mater, Walt Whitman High School
  • Dominique Dawes, retired American gymnast and Olympic gold medalist, who will speak at her alma mater, Gaithersburg High School
  • Joe Hugley, director of player relations for the Wake Forest University men’s basketball team, will speak at his alma mater, Col. Zadok Magruder High School

MCPS is also inviting students, parents and staff to submit their favorite graduation snapshots. Families should select the best graduation photo and email it to [email protected]. Many of the pictures will be posted on the MCPS website. Families and staff also can submit photos via Twitter (using the hashtag #mcpsgrad). MCPS will repost some of the photos on its social media pages.

To contribute a photo via email, follow these simple steps:

  • Choose your best, horizontal snapshot.
  • Send the photo as a jpeg file (no larger than 4 MB) and email it to [email protected].
  • Include the school name.
