MCPS Will Not Begin “Winter Competition Season” on December 7th Due to COVID Surge

Per MCPS Athletics:

As communicated on October 26, 2020, the Maryland State Board of Education approved a revised operating calendar for interscholastic athletics that includes a start date of December 7, 2020 for the winter sports competition season.

Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) will  not begin the winter competition season on Dec. 7 given the surge in COVID-19 cases in our community.

If metrics allow, in-person activities and engagement may begin when the first student groups return for in-person instruction in school buildings, which is currently scheduled for January 12, 2021.

MCPS will continue to monitor the metrics and provide updates regarding interscholastic athletics and extracurricular activities moving forward, along with the plans for the safe return of students to schools.

MCPS will continue with operations as outlined in the R.A.I.S.E. Reimagined Framework for virtual athletics, including the virtual spring athletic season that occurs December through the end of January.

The COVID-19 Task Force for MCPS Athletics will continue preparing for the return of in-person activities and will provide additional updates and recommendations to MCPS leadership for consideration and review.

We appreciate the continued efforts of staff members and stakeholders and the resiliency of our student-athletes and look forward to the return of in-person activities, when health metrics allow.
